The Solena management team have more than 20 years experience in plasma heating systems, the political and social context for green energy, international marketing and finance, and the large-scale conversion of waste, biomass, and coal products into the one thing everybody wants more of: energy.
Dr. Robert T. Do., M.S., M.D.
Founder, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Do founded Solena in 2001. In 1995, Dr. Do partnered with Dr. Salvador Camacho, the NASA plasma scientist and "father of the plasma technology", to found Global Plasma Systems for the commercialization of plasma processes. Dr. Do then put in place a well structured organization with a balanced team of technical experts and business development executives in conjunction with venture capital investment to create Solena Group, Inc. for the development of green BioEnergy Plants using SPGV plasma gasification technology in 2001. Dr. Do executed strategic partnerships with leading engineering and technology companies, such as Acciona, MPR, Ford, Bacon & Davis, GE, Bechtel and Skanska, and has successfully raised over $25 million for the Company from both equity investors and advanced funds from project sponsors. Dr. Do, with graduate degrees in Physics and Medicine from Georgetown University, is the lead author and inventor of the current SPGV technology patent filed and issued worldwide under the Patent Cooperative Treaty (PCT). Dr. Do has extensive experience as an entrepreneur, environmental scientist and in executive management positions. Dr. Do is a member of the Leadership Council of American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE), the Project Finance & Development Committee for the Biomass Coordinating Council, The Algae Biomass Counsel, Who's Who of America's Professionals and Executives, the American Medical Association, and a member of the National Council of Science and Environment.
Brian C. Miloski
Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Miloski joined Solena as CFO in 2010 after serving as an advisor to the Company since 2007. Mr. Miloski has 13 years of investment banking experience in the energy and technology sectors and has financed all levels of the balance sheet from venture equity to senior secured debt. His energy experience includes biomass, solar, advanced lighting, E&P, downstream, NG vehicles, coal and micro-wind. As an investment banker, Mr. Miloski's tenures include Caris & Company, BMO Capital Markets (NYSE: BMO) and Ladenburg Thalmann (AMEX: LTS). Prior to becoming an investment banker, Mr. Miloski worked with a WSJ All Star Equity Analyst and launched coverage on several unique companies in the energy sector. Mr. Miloski currently serves as a Senior Advisor to Caris & Company's Energy and Technology Investment Banking Group and received his Masters of Science in Finance from the University of Baltimore and his BS in Economics from the State University of New York at Cortland. Mr. Miloski is an FAA-licensed private pilot, a LEED® Accredited Professional and serves on the Board of Directors of Cleanfield Alternative Energy, Inc. (TSX-V: AIR).
Yves G. Bannel
Executive Vice President and Director
Mr. Bannel joined Solena in 2001 and has 30 years of experience in market strategy and project development throughout the world. This includes 10 years of senior management experience in the development, promotion and financing of turnkey projects in Europe, Africa, South America and the Middle East. From 1989 to 1994, Mr. Bannel was General Manager of Sateco, a French group dedicated to designing, manufacturing and selling high technology equipment for construction all over the world. During his tenure as General Manager, Sateco became a member of the top 50 companies in France in terms of sales growth, ROI and profitability allowing for the subsequent sale of the company. From 1975 and 1989 Mr. Bannel was successively the General Manager of C2EI, S&T and Gielmetti. Mr. Bannel holds a Masters Degree in Business and a Law Degree from Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC) de Paris, and a diploma from Ecole Nationale de Aéronautique Civile (ENAC) de Paris. He has served three years as a Professor of Marketing at the Bordeaux School of Business and published three books on marketing industrial products. Mr. Bannel had been Regional President of the CNPF/French Association of Businessmen for five years.
Rocio M. Velez, Esq
In-House Counsel and Vice President, Business Development Latin America and the Caribbean
Ms. Velez joined Solena in 2001 and is an attorney holding a Juris Doctor degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico. Ms. Velez is as an active member of the Bar in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Ms. Velez's experience includes over eleven years of sales, marketing, and administrative positions, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. From 1993 to 1995, Ms Velez was a corporate sales executive at American Express, Inc, where she established individual and commercial accounts that represented over $3 million dollars in annual sales for the Company with multinational client corporations including, Playtex Corporation, Wendy's, Inc., and Keebler Company. From 1999 to 2001, Ms. Velez was the Associate Director at the Grants Division of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration in Washington D.C, where she provided extensive training in areas of procurement and federal compliance, grant writing and economic development and served as a lead legislative liaison to more than 58 municipalities in Puerto Rico and over 200 non-profit organizations and Hispanic-based community organizations in the northeastern region.
Adriana L. Branch
Director, Business Operations
Ms. Branch joined Solena in 2001 and is responsible for preparing financial statements, maintaining cash controls, managing the payroll and personnel administration, purchasing, maintaining accounts payable and managing office operations, and human resources. Ms. Branch also is responsible for assisting the VP of Finance in corporate finance and assisting the CEO in various activities. Ms. Branch has been instrumental in organizing and coordinating the company's administrative and financial matters in all Solena's office as well as its representative offices worldwide. From 1998 to 2001, Ms. Branch acted in the same capacity for Global Plasma Systems. From 1996 to 1998, Ms. Branch acted as a supervisor at Georgetown University Medical Center and as business manager for a medical practice. Ms. Branch has a BS in Finance and an MS in Financial Management and Accounting from the University of Maryland.
David Schwinger
General Counsel
Mr. Schwinger joined Solena in 2010 as General Counsel after serving as an advisor to the Company since 2006. Mr. Schwinger has 28 years of experience with private law firms and representative clients include investors, start-ups, publicly and privately held, and venture capital firms, both in the U.S. and abroad. The companies were in high-tech, energy and real estate related industries and included both lenders and borrowers in numerous credit and credit-enhancement transactions along with various securitization and CDO transactions. Mr. Schwinger has worked on a full range of complex commercial and financing documents, EPC and EPCM agreements, off-take, supply and power purchase agreements, O&M contracts, hedging arrangements, parallel debt structures, leasing structures, joint venture, shareholder and other equity ownership arrangements, public-private partnerships and debt and security documents. Mr. Schwinger’s tenure includes being the Managing Partner of the Washington, DC offices of Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell and Katten Muchin Rosenman. Mr. Schwinger received his JD in 1982 from The George Washington University National Law Center, where he graduated with high honors and was a member of the Order of the Coif and his BS in 1977 from The Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania), where he graduated summa cum laude. He is a member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar.
Sylvain A. Motycka
Vice President Technology
Mr. Motycka joined Solena in 2006 and is responsible for developing Solena's Plasma Gasification plants, the related technologies and its operations. He is also responsible for managing technical teams for the development of biomass to power (BTP) and biomass to liquids (BTL) projects. Prior to joining the Solena Group, Mr. Motycka worked at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic where he was in charge of modeling plasma heat for plasma torches to be integrated in a gasification reactor. He also worked for a US-based company, SurfX Technologies, where he developed plasma reactors and has US patent to his credit. Mr. Motycka is a PhD candidate in Engineering Management at the George Washington University. He also graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique de l'Université d'Orléans - France - where he received a MEng in Electrical and Plasma Physics and from the Université d'Orléans where he received a Master in Sciences and Technology in Energetic and Environment.
Dennis F. Miller
Vice President and Science Advisor
Mr. Miller joined Solena in 2001 and is responsible for business development in North America and Solena's government liaison activities, and is based in Washington DC. Mr. Miller has more than 25 years of experience in waste management, energy, and environmental systems, including the University of Chicago's Center for Urban Studies, US Department of Energy's Waste Management Secretariat, EG&G and Lockheed Martin at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory; Energy Advisor, Government Operations Committee, U.S. House of Representatives; and the National Academy of Sciences, where he directed the Energy Engineering Board. Mr. Miller holds an A.M. Degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Chicago, where he was a Doctoral Fellow at the Center for Urban Studies. He has B.A. and M.A. degrees from Ohio State University in General Science Studies and Mathematics. Mr. Miller has authored and co-authored more than 100 published papers and reports.
Grischa Kahlen
Vice President Business Development for Europe
Mr. Kahlen joined Solena in 2001 in the Prague office where he is responsible for the preparation of Solena projects in Central and Eastern Europe. Mr. Kahlen has 15 years experiences in energy cogeneration and renewable energy production from landfill gas. In the early nineties he founded the company PDI. PDI is in charge of using landfill gas from the two biggest landfills in Prague producing electricity and heat for the district and heating more than 5000 homes in the city of Prague. His company implemented similar projects not only in the Czech Republic, but also in neighboring countries. Before the fall of the socialist system in 1990 Mr. Kahlen wasn't allowed to study in the Country's University due to political reasons. In those years he worked as a freelance interpreter. In the time of the so called "velvet revolution" in 1989 he was in the team of Mr. Vaclav Havel, the first president of the free Czech Republic, Mr. Kahlen was responsible for establishing contacts with Germany and was accompanying Mr. Vaclav to German speaking countries, as his interpreter.
Angel Prado
Vice President Operations
Mr. Prado joined Solena in 2006 and is responsible for project management and logistics of European projects. From 2003 to 2006, Mr. Prado was employed as project manager by Watlow, an electric heater and control systems manufacturer in Europe. From 2000 to 2003, Mr. Prado was employed as an energy trader by Conectiv Energy, an asset-backed merchant energy company owned by Pepco Holdings, Inc. As an energy trader, Mr. Prado was responsible for trading in electricity in the hourly and daily markets in the NYISO, New England ISO and PJM Interconnection and finding new and lucrative trading opportunities with other major RTOs in North America including MISO, SPP and Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator. Mr. Prado holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park and a B.S. in Physics from Washington College in Maryland.
Jonathan Y. Anderson
Sustainability Associate
Mr. Anderson joined Solena in 2010 and is responsible for sustainability aspects of Solena and assists on day to day operational project tasks. Mr. Anderson Received his BA in Management Finance from Virginia Wesleyan College and his MBA in Sustainability Management from Green Mountain College. Prior to his work with the Solena Group, Mr. Anderson worked on clean production technology projects for the Latin American Region of the World Bank.
Hung Bui Quang, M.Eng, MBA
Director
Mr. Bui Quang joined Solena as a member of the Board of Directors in 2006. Mr. Bui-Quang has extensive experience in project development and project financing, corporate equity fund raising, and is advising Solena regarding its capital strategy for BioEnergy Plant funding. Mr. Bui-Quang has more than 30 years of experience in the energy sector with Hydro Quebec, Gaz Metro Limited Partnership and International Consulting Engineering firms. Mr. Bui Quang is the former Vice-President of International Business Development of Hydro-Quebec; a major integrated electric utility in Canada with an installed Capacity of 35,315 MW, and annual revenue of more than $11 billion. Mr. Bui-Quang currently serves as the Regional Vice-President of RSWI, an engineering consulting firm active in 43 countries and as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Vietnam-Canada Engineering Company (VCE) with its head office in Hanoi, Vietnam. Mr. Bui-Quang holds a Bachelor of Science and a M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Ecole Polytechnique (University of Montreal, Canada) and an MBA from McGill University (Montreal, Canada). In 1992, Mr. Bui-Quang was awarded the prestigious title "Nouveau Performant 1992" (The New Management Elite 1992) by the Business Community of the Province of Quebec.
